California State University-San Marcos Athletics
The Cal State San Marcos Cougars compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in the sports of track & field, cross country, and men’s and women’s golf. While many intercollegiate athletics programs exist to increase alumni participation and generate revenue, the San Marcos athletics program has a decidedly student-centered mission, including a 100% graduation rate for all student-athletes. The program also seeks to impart “lifetime sports,” meaning that student athletes are participants long after they graduate and that Cal State San Marcos emphasizes sports that do not directly endanger students’ physical health. The athletic department states that academic enrichment takes place in and out of the classroom, and that athletics are an opportunity for students to apply the values learned during study in a competitive setting. Student recruitment is another objective of the athletics program, enhancing the University’s appeal to outstanding students nationwide and providing an attraction and “link” to external communities who previously may not have considered Cal State San Marcos as an option for their children.
